Mounties Drop Eagles in Double Overtime

Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon sank 13 of 14 free throws in final 2:33 of the second overtime to pull out a 97-93 conference victory in an extra period marathon.
 
With the Eagles leading 85-83, Max McCullough would sink the first two of the 13 free throws to tie the game at 85-85 with 2:33 left in the game. Jordan May would then follow that with a big block of a Tre Benton shot and two more EOU free throws would give the Mountaineers the lead for good, 87-85 at the 2 minute mark. Justice Martion would make it a three point game, 92-89, with 44 seconds to go, but EOU would go 5 for 6 down the stretch to clinch the win.
 
In regulation, the Eagles would lead 70-63 with 3:19 to go in the game as it looked like they might break their four game losing streak. But, the No. 20 ranked Mountaineers would match NU shot for shot and two free throws by Jordan May at 1:15 would cut the NU lead to 74-72. Neither team would be able to score and with 29 seconds to go, and leading 74-72, NU would miss the front end of a one-and-one game clincher as Max McCullough would then tie the game on a driving lay-up with 9 seconds to go to tie the game, sending it into the first overtime.
 
EOU would take an 80-77 lead with 14 seconds to go in the first extra period, but Ryan Ricks would hit a key 3-pointer with 4 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 80-all which would require a second overtime.
 
Northwest U (9-15, 3-11 CCC) was led by Tre Benton's 21 points on 8 for 23 shooting. Christian Hakilimali scored 20 points with 8 rebounds and Justice Martion dropped in 18 points. Kaelan Hicks scored 11 points before fouling out as the eagles shot 39% for the game. NU out rebounded EOU, 43-36.
 
Max McCullough led Eastern Oregon (19-4, 11-4 CCC) with a game high 24 points and 7 assists. Austin Winegar added 22 points and 8 rebounds and Jordan May contributed 20 points, 4 assists and 8 rebounds. EOU hit 43% of their shots and went 23 for 27 from the free throw line for 80%.
 
Next Up: The Eagles play the College of Idaho in Caldwell on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., PT.
