Track Opens Strong in Portland

ORTLAND – Northwest produced two top 10 finishes in its first track meet of the season, competing at the University of Portland Indoor Meet No. 3 Saturday night.

Ellie Calquhoun represented the women's team with a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters at 2:32.13.

Cameron Nielsen placed 10th in the 3000 meters at 8:57.09 to highlight the men's team.

Micah Murphy was 17th in the mile at 4:25.48, Scott Baisden got 20th in the 600 meters at 1:38.34, and Jack Kopatich placed 23rd in the 800 meters at 2:16.51.

"it was just good to get a meet under our belts," said NU Head Coach Mark Mandi. "We weren't quite sure where our fitness was at before today and now several of us have a better idea. Micah Murphy is coming off an injury but he came out and competed extremely well considering the amount of time he took off from running. Cameron Nielsen had a solid season opener, putting himself right in the mix through the first half of the race. I thought Ellie looked really competitive, passing a couple of runners in the last stretch of the race to finish second in her heat. Jack and Scott were really excited to race and it showed as both got out extremely hard. We're still getting in good training so we expect to get better each time we race."

The Eagles run again next weekend at the Whitworth Invitational and at the fourth indoor meet at UP.
