NU Pulls Away from Geoducks for Win

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University got 22 points from Tomas Ogbaslassie as the NU Eagles pulled away late in the game for a 79-64 win over Evergreen in a non-conference contest tonight.
 
After Evergreen broke out to an early 9-4 lead, Northwest U heated up to go on a 13-0 run to take a 17-9 lead, forcing three straight Geoduck turnovers and Dak Shagren hit a 3-pointer at the 14:38 mark for the Eagles. Alix Hernandez would get to the basket to score to cut the NU lead to 19-16 with 12:17 left in the half, but the Eagles would stretch the lead back to nine, 25-16,  as Ogbaslassie would get to the rim for two of his 22 points. NU would lead twice by 11 in the latter part of the half, but Hernandez would hit a long 3-pointer with 2 seconds on the clock to make it a 44-38 game at the half.
 
Northwest U would maintain a 6 to 8 point lead for 10 minutes into the second half, but Evergreen would chip away and Jordan Dam's free throw with 10:02 remaining in the game would cut the NU lead to three, 55-52. Leading 59-57, the Eagles Brandyn Winkley would give NU a lift with his dunk at the 6:09 mark to put NU up four, 61-57, and ignite an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer by Dak Shagren, a jumper and another trey by Ogbaslassie to push the Eagle lead to 69-57 with 3:26 on the clock. Evergreen would not get any closer than 9 the remainder of the game as Northwest U would post their third win of the season.
 
In addition to Ogbaslassie's game high 22, Nemanja Grujicic posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Northwest U (3-2). Dak Shagren, playing his first game in 6 weeks, scored 15 points. The Eagles outrebounded Evergreen 41-22 including 14 offensive rebounds and NU shot 55% for the game and an impressive 68% in the first half (19-28).
 
Kortney Darby led Evergreen (0-2) with 20 points hitting 9 of 17 shots for 53% shooting. Alix Hernandez scored 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and handed out 4 assists while teammate Jordan Dam contributed 9 points for the Geoducks. Evergreen shot 44% for the game (25-57).
 
"I was pleased with our guys as they maintained their poise and remained mentally tough when Evergreen made their runs tonight, especially in the second half," commented Eagle head coach, John Van Dyke. "Brandyn Winkley came off the bench in the second half, during a critical time and gave us a real lift. It was one of his best games as a member of our team."
