Eagles Hold Off Beacons for CCC Win

The NU defense collapses on Devyn Inglehart late in the game
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University held off a late Beacon push as the Eagles defeated Northwest Christian, 57-55, tonight in Cascade Conference play this evening. Northwest Christian held a narrow 29-28 lead at the half.

Northwest Christian would break out to an 18-9 lead with their consistent shooting and seven turnovers by the Eagles in the first 9:45 of the half. But Northwest U would slowly get themselves back into the game and outscore the Beacons 12-7 to trail by four, 25-21, with 3:59 left in the half. Jay Mayernik put NCU up 29-26 with a free throw, but NU's Dak Shagren would get to the basket for a score to cut the NCU lead to 29-28 at the 1:40 mark. The score would stay that way until the buzzer ended the period with NCU holding on to the one point lead.

Northwest would take a slim, 33-30 lead to start the second half after a dunk by Nemanja Grujicic and a single free throw by Shagren. But not to be denied, Northwest Christian would go on an 8-0 run punctuated by a lay-in by Mayernik to take a 38-33 lead 8 minutes into the half. The tight second half would see 11 lead changes as the teams battled. Mayernik would give NCU a 48-47 lead with 3:05 remaining, but Shagren would answer to put NU ahead, 49-48. With the game tied at 52-52 and 1:39 to go in the game, C.J. Carter would find a wide open Thomas Jordan in the right corner who would bury a trey to give the Eagles a 55-52 lead. C.J. Carter would help put the game away with two free throws with 14 seconds remaining as Jay Mayernik's lay-in at the buzzer would not be enough as NU would earn the victory.

Northwest U (10-4, 1-2 CCC) got 13 points from three players: Dak Shagren, C.J. Carter and Nemanja Grujicic. NU edged NCU in rebounding 33-32 with Shagren and Tomas Ogbaslassie each grabbing 8 to lead the Eagles.

Jay Mayernik led Northwest Christian (8-3, 1-1 CCC) with 16 points hitting 7 of 9 from the field. Travis Pacos added 12 points for the Beacons who shot 41% for the game. Michael Loomis added 9 points.

"We got off to a bit of a rocky start in the first half," said John Van Dyke, NU head coach, "but our guys settled down in latter part of the half and really played well in the second half for the win. We've had several players out with injury and illness, so for some, it was their first time back in action after sitting out a couple of games. It took them a while to get back into a game rhythm. It was a good win over a good NCU team."
