No. 13 Cavs Foil Eagles Upset Bid

Dak Shagren scored 21 points in the loss tonight
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 13 ranked Concordia held off an upset bid by the NU Eagles with a 68-60 Cascade Conference win tonight.

NU and Concordia would battle back and forth in a low scoring first half as the Eagles would break a 12-12 tie at the 11:34 mark to take a 15-12 lead on a three point play by Nemanja Grujicic who would finish with 13 first half points. NU would maintain the lead the remainder of the half building an eight point 26-18 lead with 6:37 to go in the period. Two baskets by CU's Tyler Velasquez would make it a four point game, 26-22, with 4:55 on the clock and neither team would score going a combined 0-10 the final four minutes.

The second half would be close the entire way with three ties and seven lead changes in the second half. Velasquez would tie the game at 45-all with 12:30 remaining in the game and would hold onto that lead until Tomas Ogbaslassie's 3-pointer with 10:21 on the clock would tie the score once again at 51-51. A 6-0 Concordia run would give the Cavs a 57-51 lead at the 8:19 mark. Four straight points by Dak Shagren would pull NU to within two, 62-60, at the 4:41 mark, but that would be the closest the Eagles would come the remainder of the game as the Cavaliers would close the game out for their 21st win of the season.

Dak Shagren led Northwest U (15-12, 5-10 CCC) with 21 points hitting 50 percent of his shots (8-16) while Nemanja Grujicic would finish with 20 points and 7 rebounds. The Eagles shot a respectable 51 percent for the game, but managed only 47 percent from the free throw line (9-19) and committed 18 turnovers.

Concordia (21-5, 11-4 CCC) was led by Tyler Velasquez's  20 points and 8 assists. Esvan  Middleton scored 14 points and Thomas Pierce dropped in 11 for the Cavs who shot 47 percent. CU shot only 42 percent from the free throw line converting only 6 of 14 attempts.

NU remains in Portland and faces No. 17 ranked Warner Pacific tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
