EOU Late Comeback Drops NU in Overtime

Bryan McGriff led EOU with 25 points and 15 rebounds tonight
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Bryan McGriff hit one of two free throws with 6 seconds remaining to tie the game as Eastern Oregon would go on to defeat Northwest University in overtime, 78-72.
 
Northwest U led by six, 66-60 with 55 seconds remaining, but could not convert on free throw attempts as the Mountaineers would launch a comeback. De'Sean Mattox scored 7 points in the final 55 seconds to help EOU pull to within one and McGriff tied the game with his free throw. Northwest U missed opportunities to put the game away as they would go 3 for 6 from the free throw line the final 41 seconds. Mattox hit a big 3-pointer with 48 seconds to go to make it 66-63. NU would hit one free throw and Mattox would get to the rim on a drive from the right wing to make it 67-65 with 29 seconds on the clock. After a single Eagle free throw, Mattox would get to the rim once again closing the gap to just 68-67 with 24 seconds left in the game. A steal on an NU inbound pass by Mattox would set up McGriff as he would be fouled rebounding his own miss with just six ticks on the clock. He would make the first, but miss the second as Northwest U's final shot at the buzzer would miss the mark.
 
Northwest U would take a 70-68 lead to start the OT as Nemanja Grujicic would sink two free throws. Case Rada would come up with a big 3-pointer to give EOU a 72-70 lead with 1:28 left in overtime starting an EOU 7-0 run giving them a 76-72 lead as McGriff and Mattox would close out the game going 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
 
Northwest U (15-14, 5-12 CCC) was led by Tomas Ogbaslassie's 20 points and 9 rebounds. Nemanja Grujicic dropped in 19 and Dak Shagren added 16 in the loss. NU shot 58 percent in the second half, but managed just 1 of 7 in the extra period (14 percent).
 
McGriff scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the way for EOU (13-14, 5-12 CCC). Mattox contributed 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in the effort. EOU held a 43-30 rebounding margin. The Mounties shot 42 percent in the second half and hit 2 of 3 in the overtime (67 percent) and 83 percent of their free throws (5 for 6).

"We had our opportunities tonight, but just couldn't finish," said NU head coach, John Van Dyke. "Give Eastern Oregon credit for hanging in their and coming back. I feel bad for the seniors, but we'll look forward to recognizing them tomorrow night during our final game."
 
Northwest U closes out their season tomorrow night at home hosting the College of Idaho at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Oregon plays their final regular season game in Olympia against Evergreen.
