NU Sweeps Lions and Weekend Road Trip

#7 Morgan Pilon ledt the Eagles with 21 assists tonight
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles defeated Multnomah University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-20) to sweep their weekend road trip to Portland and open 2-0 in Cascade Conference play.

Mattie Jo Johnson led the way with 11 kills and an impressive .917 hitting percentage in the three sets. A quick start in the first set would give the Eagles an 18-8 lead aided by a Johnson and Amanda Waterman kill. NU would outscore the Lions 7-3 for the set victory.

Multnomah battled NU early in the second set tying the set four times before the Eagles would break a 6-6 ties to outscore the Lions 9-3 to lead 15-9. A kill by Mattie Jo Johnson and service ace by freshman Emmaline Stockton would end the set with NU on top 25-12.

One of two new members of the Cascade Conference, Multnomah showed some grit in the third set as they would battle back from a 22-16 deficit to make it a 24-20 score after a kill by Patricia Batoon, but NU's Lara Linden's kill would finish the set as Northwest U would improve to 6-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.

In addition to Johnson's 11 kills, Amanda Waterman had 6 kills for Northwest U (6-2, 2-0- CCC), two service aces, hit .600 and teammate Hannah Hanson added 5 kills with a .571 hitting percentage. Morgan Pilon led the team once again with a team high 21 assists with Leia Roy contributing 9 digs for the Eagles.

Multnomah (0-3, 0-2 CCC) was led by Patricia Batoon's 10 kills and Amanda Rhodes tallied a match high 23 assists.

"We had a solid effort from the entire team tonight against the Lions," said NU coach, Steve Bain. "I was especially pleased with how we managed our game against an energetic opponent that was playing hard on their home court."

Northwest U will be at home next weekend hosting Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon on Sept. 11 and 12.
