Zimmerman's Golden Goal Hands Owls First Loss

NU's Kyle Zimmerman came up with the golden goal
Box Score KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.Kyle Zimmerman's shot past the Oregon Tech (RV) goalkeeper five minutes into the second overtime gave Northwest University a 2-1 Cascade Conference victory handing the Owls their first league loss of the season. NU improves to 5-1 in CCC play while Oregon Tech drops to 5-1-1.

Zimmerman's goal came inside the penalty box on a pass from freshman Jordan Travis at the 105:48 mark. The Eagles' Daniel Christenson came up with 13 saves in the game, inlcuding a huge save on a penalty kick and made 8 saves in the second half to prevent an Oregon Tech score and preserve the tie in regulation.

Lucas Hale put OIT into the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as he scored past Christenson after taking a pass from Lodewijk Bloemzaad in the box.Northwest U came back to tie the game at 17:02 as Chris Iacolucci scored on a penalty kick after an OIT foul in the penalty box. The half would end with a 1-1 tie.

Neither team would be able to muster a score in the second half with NU taking six shots and OIT getting 9. It would be Daniel Christenson's 8 saves and the Eagle defense that would hold the first place Owls scoreless for the next 60 minutes.

Jordan Travis almost got the golden goal for NU at the 104:49 mark of overtime, but Tech's goalkeeper, Dino Rozac would come up with a key save. Less than one minute later it would be Travis feeding Zimmerman for the game winner.

Northwest U (9-2, 5-1 CCC) was led by Chris Iacolucci's five shots, three on goal. Alex Ballard took three shots, one on goal and Zimmerman had two shots with the game winner.

Oregon Tech's keeper, Dino Rozac made five saves in goal for the Owls with Lodewijk Bloemzaad and Leonardo Alonzo taking three shots each for OIT.

"It's always tough to play on the road and especially at OIT," said Gary McIntosh, NU head soccer coach. "I'm really proud of the guys on how they came out and fought from the very beginning today. Collectively, everyone contributed today and that's exactly what we talk about. Daniel (Christenson) and the defense was great again limiting OIT good looks on goal. Daniel came up big with the PK save and that kept us in the game and gave us the emotional momentum that carried us through the rest of the game. It was good to see Kyle get the game winner. We will enjoy the win then wake up tomorrow and get ready for Southern Oregon."

Northwest U now moves on to Ashland and will face Southern Oregon on Saturday in Raider Stadium.
