Defense Helps Lift Eagles Over Geoducks

NU's freshman, Paige Burson (#35) led the Eagles with 11 points
Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – The NU Eagle used solid defense to lift them to a 55-43 non-conference victory over in-state rival, Evergreen, tonight on the Geoducks' home court.

Northwest changed up their defenses limiting Evergreen to putting up just 5 points on the scoreboard with 5:58 left in the first half as the Eagles took an 18-5 lead. Sadee Jones would hit one of two free throws for ESC to cut the Eagle lead to 8, 18-10 with 2:28 left until halftime, but Alyssa Dario would hit a 3-pointer with 1:37 to go to make it a 21-10 game. With 21 seconds remaining, Evergreen would cut the NU lead to 8 once again but Paige Burson would hit a jumper and Domi Mendezona would add a free throw to give NU an 11 point, 27-16 lead at the half. The Eagle defense would limit the Geoducks to 19% shooting, hitting only 5 of 26 shots.

Evergreen would make a run at the start of the second half and cut the lead to 30-23 on a 7-3 run, but the Eagles would then go on a run out scoring the 'ducks 12-1 to take a commanding 42-24 lead at the 12:28 mark. TESC would again slowly get back into the game and pick up the pressure cutting into the Eagle lead and making it an 8 point ball game, 46-38, with 7:27 to go in the game. But, once again, Northwest refused to give into the pressure by ESC and would go on a 6-0 run capped off by a Paige Burson jumper and a free throw by Jordan Asher as the Eagles would close out the game and posting their third win of the season against one loss.

Freshman Paige Burson led Northwest U. (3-1) with 11 points on 5 for 7 shooting. Seniors Alyssa Dario and Sanda Milovic each scored 9 and Chanara Greene added 8 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.  Domi Mendezona had a game high 8 assists at the point guard position. NU shot 52% for the game and a blistering 60% in the first half.

Evergreen (0-1) was led by Sammi Clark's 14 points and teammate Sadee added 11 for the Geoducks who shot 30% for the game (13-53). Brittany Gray had 9 points and 7 rebounds as ESC edged Northwest out in rebounding with a narrow, 34-33 margin.

"It wasn' pretty at times tonight, but I was happy with our overall effort," commented head coach, Ken Crawford. "We continue to learn and improve and that's a credit to our team's hard work."
