Eagles Pull Off Upset of OIT in Overtime

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University came back from a 12 point second half deficit to upset No. 20 Oregon Tech, 87-78, in overtime tonight. Trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Eagles chipped away at the OIT lead to send the game into the extra period tied at 74-all.
 
Oregon Tech bolted out to a 23-12 first half lead after Tess Armstrong's tip in at the 12:41 mark. But, an 11-2 run by Northwest would make it a 25-23 game with 10:29 left in the half after Domi Mendezona would get to the basket for 2 of her game high 30 points. The game would remain close the rest of the half with OIT gaining the upper hand and taking a 41-36 halftime lead.
 
Tech would come out fast to start the second half and outscore Northwest 17-10 to build their lead to 12, 58-46, seven minutes into the half. Northwest would stay close and a 3-pointer by Mendezona would make it a 66-64 game with 4:20 on the clock. NU's Jordan Asher would come through with a big trey with 48 seconds to go in the game to give NU their first lead in the half at 73-72 and Ashley Coila's free throw 20 seconds later would give the Eagles a74-72 lead. With 2 seconds to go, Karissa Dixon would rebound her own miss and get fouled on the put back and she would sink two clutch free throws to knot the score at 74-all sending it into OT.
 
In the overtime, it was all Northwest as they outscored the Owls 13-4 as NU would go 6 for 6 from the free throw line to pull out the victory.

Northwest U. (11-7, 3-3 CCC) was led by senior Domi Mendezona's 30 points as she hit 11 of 20 from the field. Jordan Asher scored 19 and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Eagles and Ashley Coila came off the bench to score 10 points for NU who shot 44% for the game (32-72). NU also had the edge in rebounding with a 50-40 margin including 21 offensive rebounds.
 
Kassi Conditt led Oregon Tech (16-3, 4-3 CCC) with a team high 20 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double. Karissa Dixon and Ashleigh Vanderbrink each scored 14 for the Owls who hit 345 of their shots for the night. Karly Leveque added 13 for Tech.
 
"I'm extremely proud of our ladies," said NU head coach, Ken Crawford. "It was a fun game to coach and to watch, and I am excited about the energy and perseverance they showed throughout the game. They refused to give in and to quit tonight as we continue to take steps in a positive direction. It's a credit to the work ethic we are developing."
 
Northwest and OIT continue play tomorrow night as NU hosts Southern Oregon in Kirkland, and OIT travels to Olympia to take on Evergreen.
