Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University broke open a tight game in the second half to pull away for a 63-52 Cascade Conference victory over Corban University tonight. The Eagles used a couple good runs in the second half for the victory.
The first half was close the entire way with 4 ties and 5 lead changes as the two teams battled one another. Northwest would lead 12-7 five minutes into the game, but Corban would battle back to take a 14-12 led on a 3-pointer by Sadie Pilgrim. With 4:45 left in the half and the scored tied at 22-all, Corban would go on a 6-0 run to lead 28-22 with 3:30 left until halftime. NU would slowly chip away at the lead and
Corinne Burke's two free throws at the 1:09 mark would make a one point game, 27-26. After a single free throw by Pilgrim,
Jenna Lewis would hit a big 3-pointer with 22 seconds on the clock to give the Eagles a narrow, 30-29 lead at the end of the period.
Sanda Milovic would hit a trey to tie the game for the 8
th time at 36-36 four minutes into the second half and another Milovic 3-pointer would give the Eagles the lead for good, 39-36 with 14 minutes left in the game. Milovic would drive the baseline to score 3 minutes later to increase the NU lead to 9, 45-36. A 6-0 run by Corban as Jade Lowery would drill a trey would close the gap to just 3, 45-42, with 8:16 remaining, but that would be the closest the Warriors would get as the Eagles would go on a 14-5 run to increase their lead to 59-47 as they would close out the game to improve to 14-8 on the year.
Sanda Milovic and Domi Mendezona shared scoring honors for Northwest (14-8, 6-4 CCC) with 17 points each.
Jordan Asher scored 12 points and
Chanara Greene led the Eagles with a game high 11 rebounds. NU held a 45-41 edge on rebounding.
Tara Vanweerdhuizen led Corban with a game high 28 points and 7 rebounds. Sadie Pilgrim scored 7 points and added 7 rebounds as Corban managed just 18% shooting in the second half (5-28) while the Eagles hit on 40% of their attempts.
Said NU head coach,
Ken Crawford, "It was a solid win tonight over a good Corban team. We were very happy with the way that players stepped up and contributed in all facets of the game. Those are the kind of contributions that will be important for us in the latter part of the season."
Both teams continue CCC play tomorrow night with Northwest U hosting Northwest Christian and Corban traveling to Olympia to play Evergreen.
