Second Half Comeback Earns Eagles Victory

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University overcame an 11 point second half deficit to hold on and defeat Northwest Christian 67-65, in Cascade Conference play tonight and to post their 15th win of the season. With the win, Northwest is in a 3-way tie for second in the CCC.
 
Four ties and 8 lead changes would mark a close first half for the first 14 minutes of the period, but with the game tied for the 4th time at 24-24, Northwest Christian would heat up and go on a run outscoring the Eagles, 18-9, in the final 6 minutes of the half to take a 42-31 lead at the break. NCU would hit 51% of their shots going 16-31 in the half.
 
Down 50-39 with 14 minutes to play in the game, Northwest U would go on a 16-0 run to take the lead for good at 55-50 as NU guard Jordan Asher drained a 3-pointer with 9:47 to go in the game. Northwest Christian had the final two shots of the game with 13 seconds remaining, but Chandler Gabrio's 3-point attempt with 6 seconds to go missed the mark and Tami Brown's jumper was unsuccessful at the buzzer.
 
Jordan Asher led Northwest U (15-8, 7-4 CCC) with 15 points with teammate Alyssa Dario scoring 14. Domi Mendezona added 10 points and a team high 5 assists as the Eagles. NU out rebounded the Beacons 39-37. NU would shoot 38% for the game, 42% in the second half.
 
Chantell Stanton led Northwest Christian (5-14, 2-9 CCC) with 13 points, Allie Kelsey added 12 and Chandler Gabrio dropped in 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the visitors from Eugene, Ore. After a hot first half of shooting, the Beacons would be held to 33% in the second period.
 
"It was a close call tonight against a well-prepared and spirited Northwest Christian team," commented NU head coach, Ken Crawford. "I felt our team stepped up when they had to, especially in the second half when it counted. This will be a great learning experience for us and I'm proud of our effort and resolve."
 
NU will travel to Olympia on Feb. 1 to play their in-state rival, Evergreen at 5:30 p.m.
