Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – The NU Eagles opened their 2014-15 season with a 62-52 victory over Vancouver Island University tonight in non-conference play.
NU broke our early and led 12-6 after
Paige Burson's offensive tip-in 5 minutes into the game. But VIU came back and tied the game at 12-all and took the lead. The teams would go back and forth with four ties and lead changes until Jamie Macfarlane's 3-pointer with 5:53 to go in the half would put VIU up 23-20. Northwest would counter with an 8-0 run capped off by a
Jordan Asher trey and two free throws by
Emily Henderson to put NU in the lead 28-23 with 2:29 on the clock. VIU would hit a jumper with 5 seconds to go to cut the Northwest U lead to 31-27 at the break.
Northwest U would maintain control of the game the entire second half growing their lead to 12, 40-28 after a
Chanara Greene lay-up. VIU would cut into the Nu lead several times, but each time the Eagles would answer with a run to build their lead back up.
Charity Degman would hit a jumper with 5:40 left in the game to give NU their biggest lead, 56-43, as they would close the game out for the first win of the season.

Charity Degman led Northwest U (1-0) with double-doubles. Greene scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Degman scored 11 and took down 10 boards. Freshman
Charmaine Bradford and junior
Brianna Fiso each scored 8 points for the Eagles who shot 34% for the game and out rebounded the Mariners 54-28.
For Vancouver Island (1-1), Sienna Pollard led the team with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Jenna Carver and Emily Clarke each scored 8 points and totaled 4 rebounds for the Mariners. VIU shot 33% for the game.
