Loggers Open Season with a Win Over NU

Box Score TACOMA, Wash. - The University of Puget Sound opened their 2016-17 season with a 67-50 home victory over Northwest University tonight in Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Loggers used a big third quarter of offense and defense to pull away from Northwest U. UPS outscored the Eagles 20-6 in the period to take a 54-29 lead which NU would not be able to overcome.

Leading 34-29 to start the third quarter, UPS would go on a 15-3 run to stretch their lead to 49-32 at the 5:02 mark after a steal and lay-up by Elizabeth Prewitt. Another Prewitt score in the paint with 1:24 to go would make it a 54-35 game. The Loggers would increase their lead in the fourth quarter to 25, 66-41, the largest lead in the contest.  NU would outscore UPS 9-1 in the finals minutes but it wouldn't be enough.

Katie Rozumny led Northwest U (3-3) with 10 points while teammate Paige Burson scored 9 for the Eagles. Miranda Langenhorst led the team with 10 rebounds, but UPS held a 61-43 advantage on the boards. NU shot only 24 percent in the second half, 29 percent for the game.

Puget Sound (1-0) was led by Jackson Simone's game high 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field. Elizabeth Prewitt scored 14 points and added 4 assists while the Loggers shot 34 percent for the night.

Said Ken Crawford, NU head coach, "It was a tough loss tonight, we were not in sync. We have to play better, but I have faith in my team and their ability to bounce back and I know they have great faith in each other. We're looking forward to getting on the court again."

Northwest U will travel to Portland and play Lewis & Clark College on Friday night and then on to Newburg, Ore., for a Saturday exhibition game with George Fox.
