No. 19 Mounties Defeat the Eagles

Paige Burson led NU with 16 points
Box Score LA GRANDE – After a late start time, No. 19 Eastern Oregon showed why they are a top 25 team as they defeated the NU Eagles 75-46 tonight in conference play. The game was delayed 15 minutes as the NU charter bus experienced mechanical trouble on the way from Caldwell, Idaho earlier in the day resulting in a late arrival in La Grande.

The first quarter saw the Eagles trailing by just one, 18-17, as NU got off to a good start.  The Eagles jumped out to an early 12-3 lead punctuated by a Paige Burson 3-pointer, but an 11-2 run by EOU would close the gap to two, 14-12, at the 2:33 mark. Mariah Swanson's jumper with 10 seconds left would give the Mountaineers the lead at the end of the quarter. NU battled to start the second period forcing two ties in the early going, but after a 23-23 tie, EOU would go on a 14-2 run to go up, 37-25, after Paige Burson closed the gap with her jumper. EOU would outscore the Eagles 13-4 the remainder of the period to take a 50-29 lead at halftime.

The Mountaineers would heat up to 46 per cent shooting in the second half while NU shot 27 per cent and EOU would build its lead to 25, 55-30, after an Ashley Knight basket with 42 seconds to go. Jackie Bento would make it 55-32 with her score, but Knight would answer with another basket with 4 seconds on the clock as the Mounties would lead 57-32 at the end of the third quarter. NU would not be able to make up any ground in the final period as EOU would improve to 19-4 overall and 12-2 in CCC play.

Paige Burson led Northwest U (10-15, 5-10 CCC) with a team high 16 points. Mariah Stacona and Charmaine Bradford each contributed 6 points with Bradford adding a team high 4 assists. Miranda Langenhorst would be limited to 4 points and 4 rebounds after last night's double-double in the College of Idaho game.

Eastern Oregon (19-4, 12-2 CCC) was led by Payton Parrish's 15 points and 8 rebounds. Ashley Knight scored 11 points, grabbing 7 rebounds for the Mountaineers who shot 42 per cent for the game on 29 for 69 shooting. EOU dominated the rebounding with 52 to NU's 38.

Northwest U returns to Kirkland and will host Corban and Northwest Christian in more Cascade Conference play next Friday and Saturday.
