NU Downs Red Hawks in Overtime in Opener

Box Score REDDING, Calif. – The NU Eagles opened their season overcoming a halftime deficit to defeat Simpson University in overtime, 73-67, an afternoon non-league contest in Redding.
 
The Eagle trailed 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 31-27 at halftime as Simpson hit 42% of their shots while holding the Eagles to 36%.
 
The Eagles shooting didn't improve in the second half as they hit 34% of their attempts, but their defense stifled the Red Hawks holding them to 33% shooting, going 8 for 24. The Eagles outscored the Red Hawks 33-23 in the second half to send the game into overtime. In the overtime, NU took over the game outscoring Simpson 15-9 to earn the win.
 
Senior Hannah Carlson led Northwest U (1-0) with 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Miranda Langenhorst was right behind her with 12 points and 14 rebounds and another double-double. Junior guard Mariah Stacona scored 14 points while adding 4 assists and 6 steals.
 
Fallon Greenshaw led Simpson (0-1) with 24 points while going 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Shayla Smothers scored 10 points and Alex Cooper pulled down 15 rebounds.
 
"Great opening game for the Lady Eagles," commented Ken Crawford, NU coach. "Hard fought game that went into overtime. Credit both teams for their effort and proud of our team for their perseverance and adjustments that they made. Looking forward to the season."

Next Up: NU travels to Rocklin, Calif., tomorrow to play William Jessup at 5:30 p.m.
