Eagles Win CCC Opener

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Trailing 43-41, after three quarters of play, the NU Eagles' defense came up big in the final period for a 58-52 victory in their Cascade Conference opener tonight.
 
The Eagles defense held the Lions to 9 points in the fourth quarter while scoring 17 points of their own for the comeback. Kalee Fowler and Miranda Langenhorst scored 8 second half points to help lift NU to the win.

Multnomah got off to a good start in the first quarter taking an 18-14 lead. But, Northwest U would come back in the second period to outscore the Lions 16-10, to take a 30-28 lead at halftime. The Eagles were trailing MU 28-26 with 2:18 left in the quarter as Miranda Langenhorst would tie the game at the 1:33 mark with her lay-up in the paint.  The teams would trade turnovers and it would be Mariah Stacona hitting a jumper with 5 seconds to go on the clock to give NU the lead.
 
NU would lead Multnomah a good portion of the third quarter, but with 3:27 showing on the clock, Valerie Wakefield would tie the score at 38-38 and would then sink two free throws at the 2:12 mark to take a 40-38 lead. Kalee Fowler would hit a 3-pointer at 1:26 to give the lead back to NU, but Tiara Chinn would answer for the Lions would give MU the 43-41 lead at the end of the period.
 
With Multnomah leading 52-51 with 3:53 to go in the game, NU would begin to make their move.  Kalee Fowler's jumper would give the lead back to NU for good, 53-52. Miranda Langenhorst would score inside on an entry pass from Mariah Stacona, 55-52 NU. Stacona would then hit one free throw and would then make a key steal. After an Eagle timeout, NU would run a nifty out of bounds play for a Langenhorst lay-up to clinch the victory as MU would fail to score the remainder of the game.
 
Junior Miranda Langenhorst and freshman Andie Kristinat both scored 15 points for Northwest U (2-5, 1-0 CCC). Kalee Fowler scored 10 points while Mariah Stacona finished with 5 points, 5 assists and 5 steals for the Eagles.
 
Multnomah (0-9, 0-1 CCC) was led by Tiara Chinn's 17 points. Bethany George added 12 points and Faith Kraatz finished with a game high 14 rebounds.
 
"It was a good win for the lady Eagles tonight in a hard fought contest against a motivated Multnomah team," said Ken Crawford, NU head coach. "It was back and forth the entire game with no more than 5 points separating the teams throughout. It doesn't get much easier as we face a Warner Pacific team that has reloaded for this year."
 
Next Up: The Eagles will remain in Portland and will play Warner Pacific tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
