Eagles Sweep Wolves; Improve Playoff Chances

Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The NU Eagles broke open a close game to defeat Walla Walla University, 73-55, to complete the sweep of the Wolves this weekend in Cascade Conference play and to improve their chances at a spot in the CCC post season tournament.

With the win, Northwest U has climbed into a tie with Evergreen for 7th place in the CCC standings. Eight teams will qualify for post season play and the Eagles will have an important weekend coming up with their final two league games at home next Friday and Saturday.

It looked to be a close game as the first quarter would have two ties and lead changes in the early going. After trailing 11-9, Miranda Langenhorst would tie the game and NU would take the lead for good after a free throw by Jessalyn Henry with 52 seconds left on the period for a 12-11 first quarter lead. The Eagles would then outscore the Wolves 12-3 to take a 10 point lead, 24-14, after a Kalee Fowler 3-pointer. NU would maintain that lead the remainder of the quarter, taking a 40-30 lead into halftime.

The second half would be all Eagles as they would open the half with a 14-4 run to lengthen their lead to 54-34 after an Andie Kristinat 3-pointer at the 2:57 mark. At the end of the third period the Eagles would lead 57-40.  Walla Walla would make one brief run in the 4th quarter to make it a 60-46 game, but would not be able to get any closer as NU would come away with the 73-55 victory.

Kalee Fowler had a big day for Northwest U (10-17, 7-11 CCC) scoring 24 points on 10 for shooting, 3 assists and 3 steals. Mariah Stacona had 17 points, 5 assists and 6 steals and Miranda Langenhorst registered her third straight double-double with 12 points and a game high 13 rebounds. NU shot 49% from the field and dominated the rebounding with a 40-29 margin.

For Walla Walla (3-20, 1-17 CCC), Sarah Halverson led the Wolves with 12 points and teammate Emily Downs added 10 points as the NU defense would limit them to 37% shooting and only 18% from the 3-point line.

Said Coach Ken Crawford, "The lady Eagles overcame a short turnaround between games and beat Walla Walla University for the second time in two days. It was a total team effort as we improved on our performance from yesterday. We are inching closer to a playoff spot and looking forward to our home games this upcoming weekend."

Next Up: The Eagles close out the regular season on Friday and Saturday when they host Warner Pacific and Multnomah in the NU Pavilion. Saturday will be Senior Night for the graduating seniors.
