NU Holds Off Wolves Comeback Attempts

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The NU Eagles held off third and fourth quarter comeback attempts to defeat Walla Walla, 77-67, tonight on Windemuth Court.

The Eagles came out strong in the first half shooting 58% and led by Miranda Langenhorst's 17 points on 80% shooting to take a 45-32 lead at halftime. 

In the third quarter, it would be the Wolves coming out with a fast start with an 11-3 run to trim the NU lead to five, 48-43, after a 3-pointer by Carolina Montes. But, the Eagles would not bend and a 6-3 run of their own would increase their lead to 54-45 on a Langenhorst score in the paint with 4:13 left in the period. Langenhorst would score again with 24 seconds to go in the quarter to make it a 57-49 game in favor of the Eagles at the end of the period.

Mariah Stacona would start the final quarter with a trey to give Northwest U an 11 point, 60-49 lead at 9:48, but WWU would outscore the Eagles 10-2 to cut their lead to three, 62-59, with 6:12 to go in the game. But again, NU would not give in and would hold off the Wolves. Two free throws by Emily Henderson with 58 seconds to go, would build the NU lead to 74-65 as they would go on to post the victory.

Langenhorst finished the game with 29 points and 13 rebounds for Northwest U (9-17, 6-11 CCC) hitting 13 of 16 shots for 81% shooting. Mariah Stacona would add 16 points and 6 assists as Kalee Fowler and Emily Henderson would each score 8. NU won the battle of the rebounding with a 44-39 margin with 15 offensive rebounds.

Walla Walla (3-19, 1-16 CCC) was led by Carolina Montes who scored 23 points. Sarah Halverson contributed 13 points for the Wolves who shot 37% for the game.

Next Up: NU remains in College Place for another game with Walla Walla on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game with the Wolves.
