KIRKLAND, Wash. — Northwest University Head Men's Basketball Coach Rick Skeen has announced his resignation.
A respected leader and mentor, Skeen joined the Eagles prior to the 2022–23 season and quickly made a lasting impact on the program. During his time at Northwest, he guided the team to conference playoff appearances in both the 2023–24 and 2025–26 seasons, helping reestablish a competitive culture and setting the foundation for continued success.
A Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA) Hall of Fame coach, Skeen brought a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion to Northwest University. Known for his leadership and dedication, he earned the respect of his players, colleagues, and the broader basketball community.
"I would like to sincerely thank Coach Rick Skeen for his leadership of the men's basketball program over the past four years," said Athletic Director Dr. Gary McIntosh. "Rick is an exceptional coach who has played a key role in moving our program in the right direction. This past season, the team's return to the conference playoffs is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
"While his success on the court is commendable, what stands out even more is the impact he has made off the court. Rick has invested deeply in the lives of his players, helping shape them not only as athletes, but also as young men of character. We are truly grateful for the commitment, passion, and leadership Rick has brought to Northwest University, and we thank him for the lasting impact he has made on our basketball program."
Reflecting on his time leading the Eagles, Skeen expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Northwest University community.
"I am so thankful to the many people who helped make my childhood dream of becoming a college basketball coach come true," said Skeen. "The Lord promises us in Psalm 37:4 that He will 'give us the desires of our heart,' and He fulfilled that promise to me over the past four unforgettable years. Special thanks to Dr. McIntosh, Dr. Engstrom, Dr. Castleberry, and Dr. Johnson for their support and belief in me. I'm also deeply grateful to Emily Hatate, whose dedication and service meant so much to me and to our program. To the coaches in our department—thank you for being such a joy to work alongside.
"Most of all, thank you to each player who believed in me and gave me the honor of being their coach these past four seasons, and to the assistant coaches who poured so much into our program. Coaching you has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I am excited for the future of Northwest University Men's Basketball. I hold tightly to another promise in Jeremiah 29:11: 'I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.' I believe that promise for this program and for the next chapter ahead."
Beyond wins and postseason appearances, Skeen will be remembered for the relationships he built and the positive culture he fostered within the program. His commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court leaves a legacy that will continue to influence Northwest University men's basketball for years to come.
Northwest University Athletics extends its sincere gratitude to Coach Skeen for his years of commitment and wishes him all the best in his next endeavors.
