Eagles Come From Behind to Drop William Jessup

Michael Russo scored 15 points in the Eagle comeback tonight
Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. - Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Northwest University Eagles came from behind to defeat William Jessup 70-68, in the Warrior Gym tonight.
 
Shooting just 30% (10 for 30) in the first half, Northwest fell behind 29-17 with 9 minutes to go in the period. Michael Greene's jumper would cut the Jessup lead to 11, 37-26 with 3:22 left on the clock, but  the Warriors would go on a 5-0 run capped off by Guillermo Nunez's jumper to lead 42-26 with 1:56 to go. Another Greene jumper would cut the WJU lead to 12 points, 42-30 with 28 seconds to go as NU would head to the locker room trailing at the half.
 
Northwest would step up their defensive pressure giving up just 26 WJU points in the period and Michael Russo would catch fire at the start of the second half hitting 6 of NU's first 8 points as the Eagles would cut the Warrior lead to 52-42 with 14:22 showing on the clock, but Jessup's Rob Frank's jumper at 11:58 would get their lead back up to 15, 57-42 as things looked dismal for the Eagles. But, NU would refuse to give in and would slowly chip away at the WJU lead. A 3-pointer by Ryan McIntosh, a free throw by Michael Greene and two more free throws by McIntosh would shave the Jessup lead to just one, 59-58, with 7:35 to go in the game. Tommy Jordan would hit a 3 with 3:40 left to give NU their first lead at 67-65 and put the Eagles ahead for good. Northwest would lead 70-67 with 4 seconds remaining when WJU's Justin Downer was fouled and would go to the free throw line. He would make the first and shoot hard off the rim in his second shot and Jessup's Corey Clement would grab the rebound and have a look at a 3 pointer to win the game, but it would rim out as the buzzer would sound.
 
Michael Greene led Northwest U. (4-2) with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Michael Russo would score 15 points hitting 50% of his shots while junior guard Tommy Jordan scored 10 points for the Eagles who shot 58% in the second half, including 50% from 3-point range. The Eagles also made good 85% of their free throws (17-20). 
 
William Jessup (3-3) was led by Corey Clement's 15 points and he added 7 rebounds. Anthony Edwards added 11 points for the Warriors who shot 44% for the game. The Warriors edged NU out in the rebounding column with 30 rebounds to the Eagles 28. WJU had 10 turnovers for the game.
 
"I was really encouraged by the way our guys responded in the second half when we were down big," said John Van Dyke, Eagle head coach. "We showed a lot of poise and toughness and this could be a signature moment for us early on in the season."
 
Northwest returns home to Kirkland and will host Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday and Cal Maritime next Saturday in more non-conference play.
