NU Knocks Off #22 Maritime

Greene led five Eagles in double figures with 19
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University (RV) had five players in score double figures as they defeated previously unbeaten, No. 22 Cal Maritime, 86-71, tonight in non-conference play.
 
The Eagles (6-2) were led by Michael Greene's 19 points. Senior Ryan McIntosh and junior Michael Russo each scored 17, C.J. Carter came off the bench to score 12 and Nemanja Grujicic had 10 points and 7 rebounds. NU shot 52% for the game, 44% from the 3-pont line and converted 84% of their free throws (21-25). Northwest held the edge in rebounding 36-29. Point guard Tommy Jordan had another steady night with a game high 6 assists with no turnovers.
 
Cal Maritime got off to a fast start as they hit two straight three pointers to take a 6-0 lead, but Northwest would heat up and go on a 13-6 run highlighted by 3 pointer by Ryan McIntosh and a 3 point play and 3 point shot by Michael Greene to put NU up at the 14 minute mark. The Eagles would maintain the lead throughout the half as it would grow to 11 with 11:18 on the clock after Michael Greene hit a 10 foot jumper. Dominque Barnes' jumper in the lane would cut the NU lead to 26-20, but another run (7-3) would get the Eagle lead back up to 12, 33-21 with 7 minutes left in the half. Michael Russo would hit two free throws with 27 seconds to go to up the NU lead to 46-31, but a CSUM steal of an NU rebound and a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Anthony Sind would make it a 46-34 game as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
 
The second half would see Northwest maintaining the lead the entire way. Maritime would twice cut the lead to 7, but each time NU would answer with a run of their own to get their lead back up double digits. The Eagles would go 6 for 6 from the free throw line down the stretch to earn their 6th win of the season.
 
Cal State Maritime's (6-1) Grant Blaser led the Keelhaulers with 17 points while teammate Dominque Barnes dropped in 14. Casey Healy and Levi Strandberg each scored 12 for the team from Vallejo, Calif.
 
"I was really proud of our guys tonight as they really wanted this one," commented coach John Van Dyke. "They were focused and determined to play a ranked team tough and I was pleased with their effort. They showed a lot of maturity and we keep taking steps in a positive direction."
 
Northwest U. will take a Thanksgiving break and then travel to College Place to play two games with Walla Walla University on November 29 and 30. Cal Maritime will travel to Olympia to play Evergreen on Sunday.
