Late Beacon Run Drops No. 17 Eagles

Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – A late fourth quarter run by Northwest Christian would be the clincher as the Beacons upset No. 17 Northwest University 72-65 tonight in conference play. NCU improves to 2-0 in the CCC while the Eagles drop to 2-1.

After a close and low scoring first half that would see Northwest Christian take a 35-29 lead at the break.

The second half would prove to be close as well with NCU taking an 8 point, 41-33 lead after Travis Pacos' driving lay in with 16:05 left in the game. Northwest would slowly chip away at the Beacon lead and with 9:04 on the clock, NU's Michael Greene would sink a free throw to make it a 2 point game, 53-51. Austin Kuemper would answer for NCU to put NCU up 54-51, but Ryan McIntosh would hit a big 3-pointer to cut the NCU lead to one, 55-54 with 8:25 remaining. NU would take their only lead in the second half after Michael Russo would sink two free throws to make it 60-59 Northwest with 4 minutes left in the game. NCU would then go on a 15-9 run capped off by two Spencer Coleman free throws with 21 seconds left to give the Beacons a 70-63 lead. C.J. Carter and Michael Russo would both be fouled on 3-point attempts late in the game, but they would collectively go 2 for 6 from the free throw line ending a chance to close the gap in the finals seconds.

Michael Greene finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Northwest U. (11-3, 2-1 CCC) and teammate Nemanja Grujicic added another double-double for the Eagles with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan McIntosh finished with 10 points as the Eagles shot 39%. NU hit only 62% of their free throws going 13 of 21 from the line. The Eagles out rebounded NCU 40-38.

Northwest Christian (8-4, 2-0 CCC) was led by Austin Kuemper's 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jevonte Byrd added 13 while Coleton Baker and Travis Pacos each added 11 for the Beacons. NCU shot 44% for the night, managed 63% free throw shooting, and a cool 15% (2-13) from the 3-point line.

The Eagles move on to play Corban tomorrow night in Salem in another CCC game at 7:30 p.m.
