Eagles Down Owls in Double Overtime

C.J. Carter gets through the OIT defense for 2 of his 27 points
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University and Oregon Tech battled to a double overtime finish tonight with NU earning a 95-88 victory in CCC play. C.J. Carter came off the bench to score 27 points and grab 11 rebounds to help lift the Eagles to the win.
 
Oregon Tech looked as though they were going to post coach Dan Miles 999th win as they sprinted out to a 16-6 lead six minutes into the game. C.J. Carter's three would make it 16-12, but OIT's Brandon Bautista would hit a trey with 8:09 remaining in the half to increase the Owl lead to 9, 26-17. Derek Evans would bury another 3-pointer with 4:56 left on the clock to increase the Tech lead to 33-23 as they would go on to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
 
Northwest would heat up to start the second half and a 15-7 run would tie the score at 44-44 with 14 minutes left in the game. After the 7th tie of the half and with 11 seconds remaining, Tech would go up two, 67-65, but Josh Johnson would commit his fifth foul with just 1 tick on the clock and Michael Greene would sink two free throws to tie the score once again at 67-all as the half would end.
 
Kyle Waits dunk off an assist from Bautista would give OIT a 74-70 lead with 1:45 left in the first overtime. Trailing by three points with just 9 seconds to go in the extra period, Northwest's C.J. Carter would hit a 20 foot 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 80-all and send it into the second overtime.
 
With the score 85-85 in the second overtime, C.J. Carter would hit a jumper with 2:20 to go to give Northwest the lead for good as the Eagles would build their lead to 95-88 on 8 for 8 shooting from the free throw line.
 
In addition to Carter's game high double-double (27 pts., 11 rebounds), four other Eagles scored in double figures for Northwest (13-4, 4-2 CCC) led by Michael Greene's 17 points; Michael Russo with 16, Ryan McIntosh and senior Brett Skogstad came off the bench to contribute 10 points, hitting 2 of 3 three pointers. NU shot 49% from the field and 72% from the free throw line, but 93% in the overtime (14-15).
 
Oregon Tech (11-8, 4-3 CCC) was led by Derek Evans' 23 points followed by Brandon Bautista's 16 points and 7 assists. Mihajlo Matic dropped in 15 points and Kyle Waits registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Owls shot 41% for the game. Tech won the rebound battle with a 45-43 edge over Northwest including 15 offensive rebounds.
 
"What a battle," commented John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "You can always count on a competitive game when OIT and Northwest meet because you know Dan Miles will have his team prepared to compete. I'm proud of the way our guys found a way to dig deep when it counted and grind out the victory tonight. The conference is very tough this season, so we value each home victory."

The Eagles remain at home tomorrow when they host No. 6 ranked Southern Oregon at 7:30 p.m.
