Eagles Come from Behind to Edge EOU

Box Score LAGRANDE, Ore. – Northwest University overcame a 10 point halftime deficit to defeat Eastern Oregon, 59-58, in a key Cascade Conference game tonight in the Quinn Coliseum.

The Eagles were held to 30% shooting in the first half hitting just 9 of 30 shots as Eastern Oregon would take a 34-24 lead into the locker room. Only four Eagles scored in the half with Michael Greene leading the way with 13 of NU's 24 points.

The second half would be a different story for Northwest U as they would hit 48% of their shots and go on a 13-2 run to start the period to take a 37-36 lead after Dak Shagren's 3-pointer at the 15:42 mark. The half would be close the entire way with two ties and 11 lead changes as the teams battled back and forth. Nemanja Grujicic would hit a big jumper with 3:13 to go to give NU a narrow, 53-51 lead. Grujicic would have to leave the game with an injured ankle. After EOU would re-take the lead at 56-55, Michael Greene would score 2 of his game high 25 on a jumper to give NU the lead with 1:27 left in the game. EOU's Trevor Phillips would get to the rim for a lay-in with 1:04 to go to give the lead back to the Mountaineers. NU's Michael Russo would hit what would prove to the game winner with 46 seconds left in the game with his short jumper. With 19 seconds to go, Cody Shackett would miss the front end of a 1 and 1 giving possession back to EOU. With only 4 team fouls, NU would make good use of their fouls and play solid defense as Trevor Phillips would miss a 10 foot baseline jumper as the Eagles' Ryan McIntosh would grab the rebound for the NU victory.

Northwest U's (19-9, 10-7 CCC) Michael Greene scored 25 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the way for the Eagles. Michael Russo added 15 and Nemanja Grujicic scored 7 points as NU hit 39% of their shots. The Eagles were 8 for 11 from the free throw line (73%).

Tony Eackles led Eastern Oregon (15-12, 6-11 CCC) with a team high 8 points. Killian Wood added 14 points and Trevor Phillips scored 9 points for the Mounties. EOU shot 46% for the night and out rebounded Northwest 37-31.

"Eastern Oregon always proves a tough place to play for us," said John Van Dyke, head coach of the Eagles, "but we hung in there and had to grind it out after a cold shooting first half. Our guys did not give up and kept fighting the entire way. They definitely earned this win tonight. Cody Shackett stepped in and gave us a good effort tonight when we needed it."

Northwest U now heads to Caldwell to play the College of Idaho tomorrow night in the final regular season game. Seedings will be released late tomorrow night which will determine where the first round games will be played in the CCC post season tournament.
