No. 18 SOU Wins the Battle of the Ranked Teams

Ryan McIntosh led all Eagle scorers with 22 points tonight.
Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – No. 18 Southern Oregon won the battle of the NAIA ranked teams tonight, defeating No.18 Northwest University 92-79, in Bob Rhiem Arena tonight. SOU improves to 9-5 in CCC play while the Eagles fall to 8-5 in the conference.

The teams battled early as the score stayed tight as twice Nemanja Grujicic baskets would pull the Eagles to within three. His lay-up with 8:39 on the clock would make it a 23-20 game, but Eric Thompson, on his way to a 38 point night, would hit a 5-pointer at the 5:36 mark to give the Raiders a 10 point, 32-22 lead. Two Ryan McIntosh free throws would make it 36-31 (2:44), but a lay-up by Jordan West and a trey by Kyle Tedder would give SOU a 41-31 lead with a minute to go in the half. McIntosh would hit two free throws with 15 seconds to go to cut the SOU lead to 8, 41-33 at halftime.

Northwest would come out fast to start the second half and a 12-5 run capped off by a McIntosh 3-pointer and a score in the paint by Grujicic would cut the SOU lead to just one, 46-45, three minutes into the final period. Southern would then outscore the Eagles 9-2 and another Thompson score would give the Raiders a 55-47 lead with 13:17 on the clock.  Ryan McIntosh would hit another trey to cut the SOU lead once again, 63-59, with 9 minutes left, but a Raider 8-0 run would give SOU a 71-59 lead which NU would be unable to cut into as the Raiders would close out the game for the victory.

Senior Ryan McIntosh led the Eagles (17-7, 8-5 CCC) with his team high 22 points. Michael Greene surpassed the 1,500 point career mark tonight with 16 points and Nemanja Grujicic had another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. NU hit 44% of their shots and hit 10 of 11 free throws for 91% shooting from the free throw line.

Southern Oregon's (20-6, 9-5 CCC) Eric Thompson matched his career high with 38 points and added 8 rebounds. He hit 15 of 22 shots for 68%. Guard Kyle Tedder added 20 points and David Sturner contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Raiders. SOU was impressive with a 57% shooting average for the night and out rebounded NU 35-30.

"We put up a good effort tonight, but fell a little short," commented John Van Dyke of Northwest U. "With the travel being so difficult, we missed our practice time, so we basically got off the bus and played the game. I have confidence in our guys to bounce back and we'll be prepared for another tough opponent in Oregon Tech tomorrow night."
