OIT Nips Eagles in Overtime

Box Score KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – For the second time this season NU and OIT go to overtime and this time the Owls win 91-90 as Dak Shagren's jumper misses the mark at the buzzer. The Eagles drop to 8-6 in league play while Oregon Tech improves to 8-6.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half with the game tied four times and the lead changing hands three times. A jumper by Brett Skogstad and a 3-pointer by Ryan McIntosh would give NU a 6 point, 39-33 lead with 6:48 left in the half.  OIT would tie the game and take a two point lead (45-43) after two free throws by Kyle Watts with 3:37 to go in the half. With Tech leading 49-45, Nemanja Grujicic would hit a jumper to make it a two point ball game, but Austen Flint would hit two free throws with 31 seconds left to give Tech a narrow 50-47 lead at the half.

OIT would continue to lead a good portion of the 2nd half until Grujicic would make two free throws with 4:24 to go to tie the game at 78-78. With 24 seconds to go, OIT's Tanner Manselle would hit a jumper to give the Owls an 85-82 lead. On the next possession C.J. Carter's missed three would be grabbed by Ryan McIntosh who would pass the ball to Carter and he would find Dak Shagren wide open on the left side for a three pointer to tie the game with 11 seconds to go. OIT would have a last shot attempt with .6 seconds to go which would miss the mark.

In the extra period, Tech would take a 4 point lead after two free throws by Austen Flint, 91-87 with 1:07 remaining. After an NU miss, OIT's Josh Johnson would miss the front end of a 1-and-1 giving the ball back to the Eagles. With the shot clock running down, Ryan McIntosh would find Grujicic open in the right corner and he would drain a trey to make it a one point game, 91-90 with 47 seconds to go. C.J. Carter would steal the ball with 13 seconds to go, drive the lane and miss. Both teams would grab the rebound, jump ball, possession to NU with 4 seconds on the clock. Grujicic would drive down the right side of the lane and find Shagren open in the right corner, but his shot rimmed out at the buzzer.

Michael Greene led Northwest U (17-7, 8-6 CCC) with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Nemanja Grujicic finished with 20 points while C.J. Carter dropped in 16 and Brett Skogstad 11. NU shot a respectable 52% for the game and hit 87% from the free throw line while winning the rebounding battle, 32-24.

Oregon Tech's (15-12, 8-7 CCC) Duncan Schramm led all scorers with 25 points. Brandon Bautista had 14 points and 9 assist and Derek Evans scored 13 for the Owls. Tech shot 56% on the night and 83% from the free throw line.

"It's tough to lose close games like this," commented Coach John Van Dyke of Northwest U, "but I'm extremely proud of the way our guys continued to battle the entire game. We were just one shot away from coming away with a hard fought victory."

NU returns home for their final two regular season home games when they host Concordia and Warner Pacific on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15.
