Strong Second Half Powers Eagles Over Lions

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Down by 10 at halftime, the NU Eagles shot 73% in the second half for a come from behind 81-71 victory to open their Cascade Conference season.  Justice Martion and Tanner Davis would combine for 48 points in the victory.
 
With Multnomah hitting 6 of 15 3-point attempts in the first half, the Lions shot 47% overall as they would take a 40-30 lead at the half. Brett Blackstock's driving lay-up at 11:37 would give MU their largest lead of the half, 21-11. But, Northwest U would chip away at the Lion lead and with 4:11 left on the clock, Justice Martion would score two of his 25 points to cut the MU lead to four, 28-24. But, the Lions would increase their lead and with 1:11 to go, Jon Viles' 3-pointer would put MU up 40-28 as Martion would hit a jumper with 58 seconds on the clock to give MU the 10 point halftime lead.
 
Northwest U would heat up and come out strong to start the second half with a 10-0 run as Jasdeep Singh's score in the paint would knot the score at 40-40 at the 17:48 mark. The two teams would then lock up in an exchange of baskets for the next ten minutes until the 9:47 mark when NU would begin a 13-0 run to stretch their lead to 74-60 after Chris Hakilimali's lay-up. The Lions would get no closer than 8 the remainder of the game as the Eagles would go on to post the CCC victory.
 
Justice Martion led Northwest U (7-4, 1-0 CCC) with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Tanner Davis added 23 points and 7 rebounds as the Eagles hit 22 of 30 shots in the second half for 73%. Christian Hakilimali scored 12 points with 4 assists. NU out rebounded Multnomah 41-34.
 
Multnomah (2-6, 0-1 CCC) was led by Darius Redrick's 13 points. Trey Fountain and Max Upchurch each scored 12 for the Lions who went 15-42 from the 3-point line, but MU would go 3 for 9 from the 3-point line the final 7 minutes of the game after hitting 9 in the second half.

"We gave up too many 3-point field goals tonight, but finally found a way to cool Multnomah down," said Jeff Drinkwine, NU Eagle coach. "It took some defensive effort and teamwork and the guys were willing to work hard at it. We'll face another good three point shooting team tomorrow night in Warner Pacific, so we'll need to carry over our second half effort to that game."
 
Next Up: The Eagles will travel a few miles south of Multnomah to take on Warner Pacific at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
