Beacons Earn First CCC Win in Overtime

Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest Christian's Michael Loomis, Reece Robinson and Davonte Cleveland combined for 71 points as the Beacons defeated Northwest U in overtime, 102-98, tonight, to earn their first conference win of the season.
 
The Eagles led 44-39 at halftime, but the Beacons came back strong to outscore NU 47-42 in the second half to send the game into overtime.
 
With 6:01 to go in the game, Tanner Davis' score in the paint gave the Eagles a 77-67 lead as it looked like they were headed for a road trip split, but a 13-2 Beacon run punctuated by a Reece Robinson 3-pointer, would give NCU their first lead of the half. Ryan Ricks would answer with a big trey and Kaelan Hicks would follow with a driving lay-up to put NU up four, 84-80 with 1:02 remaining. After a missed 3-pointer by the Eagles, NCU would hit one free throw and following an Eagle turnover, Tyrus Hosley would hit a huge 3-pointer to give NCU an 86-84 lead with 17 seconds left on the clock. After an NU timeout, Tanner Davis would score in the paint to tie the game at 86-86 to send the game into overtime.
 
The overtime would belong to Northwest Christian as the Beacons would shoot 60%, hitting 6 of 10 shots while NU would manage just 3 for 9 shooting and turn the ball over three times. A single free throw by NCU's Spencer Mattox with 46 seconds to go would give the Beacons a 100-93 lead as Tyrus Hosley would go 2-for-2 from the free throw line with two seconds to go to clinch the Beacons' first conference win.
 
Northwest U (8-8, 2-4 CCC) led five Eagles in double figures with 29 points. Justice Martion added 18 points; Tanner Davis, 13 points; Kaelan Hicks, 12 points; and Ryan Ricks with 10 points. Turnovers hurt the Eagles as they turned the ball over 25 times to NCU's 7. NU dominated the rebounding with a 52-34 margin with Jasdeep Singh grabbing 12 and the Eagles shot 55% for the game.
 
Michael Loomis scored 25 points to lead Northwest Christian (5-7, 1-4 CCC) with Davonte Cleveland and Reece Robinson each scoring 23 points. NCU shot 44% for the game.
 
"A disappointing loss for us tonight," said Jeff Drinkwine, NU coach. "The guys gave a good effort, but we've got to learn how to close out a game and also realize playing on the road is very tough in this conference."
 
Next Up: NU will be at home next weekend as they play host to the College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon on Friday and Saturday.
