No. 8 Beacons Hold Off Eagles

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – No. 8 Northwest Christian University remained in first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with a 92-88 victory over Northwest University tonight in the NU Pavilion. With the win, the Beacons improve to 14-2 in CCC play.
 
Four ties and eight lead changes would mark a closely played first half with the Eagles taking a six point lead, 22-16, 9:39 into the half. NU would maintain the lead until the 3:06 mark when Brock Rice would hit three free throws to put NCU into the lead, 33-32. The Beacons would outscore NU 8-2the rest of the half to take a 41-34 lead into halftime.
 
The No. 8 ranked Beacons would maintain their lead the entire second half and with 8:39 to go, Kenny Blackwell's two free throws would make it a 10 point NCU lead, 67-57. NU would cut the Beacon lead to three on three occasions, but each time, NCU would answer. NCU would go 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the final 57 seconds to notch their 20th win of the season against three defeats.
 
Northwest U (17-8, 9-8 CCC) was led by Ben Tucakovic's 27 points and 7 rebounds in the losing cause. Michael Dupree and Dak Shagren each scored 15 for the Eagles who shot 49 per cent for the night. NU managed just 6 of 17 from the free throw line for a 35 per cent average. It would be a 9-2 run by the Beacons to give them a 41-34 halftime lead.
 
Kenny Blackwell led five Northwest Christian (20-3, 14-2 CCC) players in double figures with 18 points. Michael Loomis came off the bench to score 15 points; Jay Mayernik with 13 points and 11 rebounds; Brendyn Taylor dropped in 12; and Jack Hackman finished with 11. The Beacons shot 55 per cent and 50 per cent from the 3-point line. NCU shot 72 per cent from the field.
 
"If you'd have told me we'd go 6 for 15 from the free throw line tonight, I wouldn't believe it, but we struggled tonight," said John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "Give credit to Northwest Christian for making theirs and key shots when it counted. They showed why they are the No. 8 team in the NAIA and refused to give in."
 
Northwest U completes their regular season home schedule next Saturday night when they host Walla Walla University in Kirkland.
