KIRKLAND – Northwest starts the 2022-23 men's basketball season with an exhibition game on Thursday against Lincoln University and a counting game against Capilano on Friday. Both games tip at 7 p.m.

The Eagles have won seven of its last eight season openers, and the lone hiccup was in 2020 when Portland State knocked off the Eagles, 88-48.

The Eagles have never played NCAA Division II Lincoln. Northwest is 4-0 against Capilano, including a season-opening win against the Blues in the 2018-19 season.

Northwest begins the Rick Skeen coaching era this week. Coach Skeen is Northwest's eighth coach since the 1969-70 season. Only two of those previous seven won their inaugural game.

CaCoa Chatman, Joose Lee, AJ Chappell, Devante Powell, and Daniel Sharpe all return from last year's team and represent 31 starts and 680 points in the 21-22 season.

A dozen new players pepper the Northwest roster for 2022-23. They include forwards Luke Howard, Lewis Pope, Brody Steinhart, Anthony Howard, James Laurence, Djordje Mitrovic, Isaiah Williams, Dawit Nuguse, and Dewitt Bullock and guards Matt Amano, Drew Bryson, and O'Shae Barquet.

Chatman returns as the leading scorer from the 21-22 season. He averaged 14.9 points and was a 43.2 percent shooter from three-point range. He also led the team with 1.7 steals per game and averaged 4.1 assists.

Lincoln is guided by former NBA and Seattle Sonics icon Gary Payton. The Oaklanders opened with a 95-81 loss at Western Washington, followed by an 82-78 win over Simpson. Goodnews Kpegeol led the Oaklanders with 22 points and eight rebounds against WWU, with Donovan Sanor adding 20 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles defeated Capilano 91-66 in 2018-19 in the Corban Classic. Hussayn Ford had 14 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes that game for the Eagles.

This will be the first non-scrimmage for the Blues. Capilano returns leading scorer Tyrone Asenoguan, who averaged 16.2 points last season. He shot 51 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range. The Blues averaged 92 points per game last season and owned a 10-6 record.
