Dak Shagren scored 19 points on 58% shooting as the NU Eagles downed the Pacific Lutheran Lutes 65-56 in non-league play on the Names Family Court tonight. It was NU's fourth game in five nights.
Â
Shagren hit 7 of 12 shots and went 5 for 10 from beyond the 3-point arc to lead the way for the Eagles who posted their 7th win of the season. The Eagles scored 52 points less than last night's 117 point output.
Â
The game didn't start out in the Eagles favor as the Lutes got off to a quick start and taking an early 17-7 lead with 7:39 left in the half, but the Eagles would heat up and the defense would clamp down as NU would go on a 12-0 run to take the lead 19-17 with 6:18 to go in the half. PLU would regain the lead briefly at 22-21, but a 6-0 spurt by the Eagles would give them back the lead, 28-22 with 24 seconds on the clock. The Lutes would hit a trey with 4 seconds on the clock to close the gap to 28-25 at the break.
Â
Northwest U would never trail in the second half as PLU would get to within four twice, but each time the Eagles would answer to build their lead. PLU would make it a 36-32 game with 13 minutes left in the game, but a lay-in by
Brandyn Winkley and another one by
C.J. Carter would give NU a 40-32 lead which they would never give up the remainder of the game.
Â
In addition to Shagren's 19,
Thomas Jordan scored 12 points and handed out 4 assists while teammate
Tomas Ogbaslassie chipped in 11 for the Eagles who shot 45% for the game. NU held a 35-30 margin in rebounding with
Marko Nikolic grabbing 10.
Said NU head coach,
John Van Dyke, "Having played our fourth game in five nights, our legs were tired but we found a way to fight through the fatigue tonight.
Thomas Jordan gave us a big lift in the first half and Dak (Shagren) shot the ball really well for us. We're excited to play Lewis-Clark State on Friday as they are a very physical team and it will be a great challenge."
The Eagles take a short break for Thanksgiving before they return to the Pavilion this Friday to host NAIA Division I Lewis-Clark State.
